ARLINGTON UPDATE

SILVER SPRING UPDATE

Arlington - Marymount

End-of-Week Update

Friday was our Gallery Walk day! Campers showed off their creative for parents and loved ones!

Micro:bit campers left parents, instructors, and visitors in awe of the brilliance of their projects. Sister bonding took place in micro:bit as two sisters made an animal carousel. One camper created a remote control car (designed with code) that knocked a battery through an obstacle and into a finish line! Once the battery hit the finish line, the obstacle lit up. We also saw a family of aliens!

Web Development was eye-opening to the audience! These campers used HTML and CSS to create projects they were passionate about, such as a tribute to graffiti art and a demonstration on the need to protect our oceans.

This week Scratch campers dedicated time to create storytelling projects and games. A parent from Scratch Co-ed campdescribed the confidence their son has gained since starting Scratch and being a student at Boolean Girl. At the gallery walk, one camper presented a game where you could not step on the lava -- you had to make your way through the course to win! Another student from Scratch Girls created a project to show her love for fairies. She was most excited to present it to her parents and visitors!

Mid-Week Update

We kicked off the week with so many fantastic projects already in creation!

Reminder: Fun Friday Presentations & Pizza
We will be having pizza for lunch on Friday, so if your child would like to have pizza, please send them with $5 by the end of Thursday (if you haven't already) and we will add them to the pizza order list.

We will also be having our camp-wide project presentations for each camp starting at 2PM. We invite all families to come by to see our young coders’ projects from each of our camps. Whether you can or can’t make it, or need to show up later than 2PM, your child will have their project saved on their online account and on our public Google Drive, which will be accessible at home. More information will be sent in our recap email after Camp has concluded (email will be sent the following week).

Build Games in Scratch

After learning how to create stories in Scratch, our advanced Scratch campers are exploring how to create their own gaming platform like the classics, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and so many more. Most students decided to make interactive games or videos. We're looking forward to seeing the final results for games like "Farm Hop" on Friday!

Question to ask your budding computer scientist: What kind of game are you building, and what are your sprites doing?

Storytelling in Scratch (Scratch 1)

Earlier this week, our Scratch camps started creating stories, developing plots, characters, and settings. Over the next few days, they will use Scratch to render their own code and make their original stories come to life!

Question to ask your Storytelling in Scratch camper: Who are your main characters (sprites) are and what is your story about?

micro:bit Robotics

Our micro:bit Robotics campers are learning how to create inventions by programming micro:bit microcomputers with Microsoft Make:Code. Getting creative, campers will design, build, and code their own inventions. So far, they've been working on building their own robotic pets and will soon be adding various motors and sensors to them.

Campers are learning how to code lights, lasers, and buzzers! What's really cool about micro:bit is seeing the development processes of the kids' projects. These lights, lasers, or buzzers will be part of a grand design! Students created animals and cartoon characters for their projects. There was a Pikachu project that will be very exciting to see at the upcoming gallery walk.

Question to ask your micro:bit Robotics camper: What robotic invention are you working on creating?

Web Development
In our Web Development camps, campers have been creating their own websites about themselves and their interests by writing HTML code and formatting it with an external CSS stylesheet. They are making their own classes and IDs in CSS to change the look of their websites as well as adding images and links.

Question to ask your future web developer: What will they be showcasing on their website?

Mid-Week Update

Reminder: Pizza Party Friday!

Children who don't want pizza should bring their lunch, and everyone should still bring their snacks. We will also be having a "Show and Tell" for students to present to their classmates and families. If you are available to join, the Scratch room will present first at 2:30PM, and at 2:45PM we will all go see what the Python and micro:bit rooms have made.

Explore Artificial Intelligence Using Scratch

In our Artificial Intelligence camp, your children are applying their coding knowledge in Scratch to build an AI app using machine learning. Throughout the week, campers are learning how to interact with AI tools and how AI impacts our lives.

Question to ask your AI camper: What kind of application are you creating?
