Written by Boolean Girl | Jun 27, 2024 11:25:14 AM

This week, our Bethesda camps kicked off with Storytelling in Scratch and Getting Started in Python (Python 1). In Arlington, we hit the ground running in week 2 with more Storytelling in Scratch and Python 1, in addition to Web Development.

On Friday, we were astounded by the presentations in Scratch, Python, and Web Development (Arlington) this week! Check out some we caught on camera in the photos below, and check your email for how to access your child's project going forward.

Mid-Week Update

Scratch

Earlier this week, our Scratch camps started creating stories, developing plots, characters, and settings. Over the next few days, they will use Scratch to render their own code and make their original stories come to life!

We are already seeing some very unique projects in Scratch, including friends chatting in outer space, characters defeating monsters in caves, and friends celebrating birthdays in the ocean.

Question to ask your Storytelling in Scratch camper: Who are your main characters (sprites) are and where is your adventure heading?

Python 1

Campers who have been through Scratch programs previously are getting started in Python in our Python 1 camp. They are learning the basics of Python such as variables, functions, and libraries. Campers are creating digital art using a code library called Turtle. So far, they have been using the "pen" function to draw their own lines, shapes, and looping drawing animations. A free development environment you can use to code in Python at home is Trinket.

Some of the early projects include creating sunsets, geometric animations, and favorite characters.

Question to ask your Getting Started in Python (Python 1) camper: What kind of art are they creating?

Web Development

In our Web Development camps, campers have been creating their own websites about themselves and their interests by writing HTML code and formatting it with an external CSS stylesheet. They are making their own classes and IDs in CSS to change the look of their websites as well as adding images and links. Children can learn more about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript at www.w3schools.com.

Question to ask your Web Development camper: What are you going to show visitors who come to your website?

Friday Update

Guest Speaker- Dr. Harish Aryal

We were delighted to have Dr. Harish Aryal speak to our campers on Friday. The children learned about the various kinds of engineering, how energy is generated, and what components are involved in mechanical engineering. In addition, Dr. Aryal spoke about project-based learning and some of the exciting projects he's worked on. Finally, he showed a video demonstration of a Stirling engine, an engine that converts thermal energy to mechanical energy.
